Our Consultant Picks Of The Month

  1. 2005 Landmark Overlook Chardonnay – Sonoma County, Santa Barbara County, & Monterey County, CA -- $27.99
The 2005 (74% Sonoma, 16% Santa Barbara, and 10% Monterey fruit) exhibits a light green/straw color as well as attractive aromas of honeyed citrus, tropical fruits, and spices. Excellent acidity, a lovely texture and mouthfeel, and medium body suggest this complex Chardonnay will drink well for several years. It represents a hypothetical blend of a classic white Burgundy and a California Chardonnay.

  2. 2005 Orogeny Pinot Noir – Green Valley, CA -- $44.99
The 2005 Orogeny Green Valley Pinot Noir is a blend from several vineyards in the Green Valley sub-appellation. The vineyards represent different clones, each of which contributes something unique to the finished wine. Each vineyard site has been carefully selected to display the bright, crystalline fruit characteristics of classic Green Valley Pinot Noir. On the palate, the bright cherry flavors dominate, supported by lively notes of blackberry and blueberry that linger on the candied-cherry finish.

  3. 2003 Northstar Merlot – Columbia Valley, WA -- Reg $59.99 Sale: $29.99
The 2003 Columbia Valley Merlot (9,137 cases) displays attractive aromas of chocolate-tinged blackberries and dark cherries with concentrated plums and currants. Armed with excellent to outstanding depth of fruit, this dark berry-flavored wine is medium-bodied and firm tannins structured with power and elegance. The rich, concentrated front and middle palates roll seamlessly into the generous, silky finish.
    Wine Spectator – 91 Points
  4. 2004 Shafer Relentless Syrah – Napa Valley, CA -- $79.99
The 2004 Relentless is one of the more elegant styles they have produced. The wine exhibits a deep ruby/purple color to the rim, fine notes of blackberries, graphite, pepper, and some vanilla. Subtle smoke, oodles of fruit in a deep, full-bodied style, with sweet tannins and a silky finish are present. Despite its exuberance and front-end loaded style, I suspect this wine will last 12-15+ years. One of Napa’s most prominent and respected wineries, Shafer is a poster boy for remarkable and consistent quality across the board. All of this is the work of the brilliant father and son team of John and Doug Shafer as well as their long-term winemaker and vineyard manager, Elias Fernandez. With over 200-plus acres of estate holdings, and 55 surrounding their winery in Stags Leap, this is a winery that never seems to disappoint.
Robert Parker Jr. – 92 Points
  5. 2005 Shirvington Shiraz – McLaren Vale, Australia -- $79.99
A gorgeous effort, the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon screams blueberries, creme de cassis, licorice, cedar, and spice box. The oak component can not stand up to the lavish, extravagant amounts of fruit and glycerin. This intense, full-bodied, surprisingly pure and elegant Cabernet should last at least a decade. Owners Paul and Lynn Shirvington have replaced winemakers Sarah and Sparky Marquis with Kim Johnston, who appears to be following in the same footsteps, producing bigger than life, bold, rich, but beautifully linear and precise wines.
Robert Parker Jr. – 95 Points
